The Very Best Defense

Sitting with the Shepherd

My defense is of God, Who saves the upright in heart. God is a just judge, And God is angry with the wicked every day. (Psalms 7:10-11 NKJV)

We live in a culture that seems to be going from bad to worse. The things that society once considered perverted and shameful are now "tolerated" and publicized. Purity and godliness are mocked and looked upon as foolishness. As God's children, holy and accepted in the Beloved, we can tend to feel alone and overwhelmed. The psalmist felt that way a long time ago when he lamented saying, "Behold, these are the ungodly, Who are always at ease; They increase in riches. Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain, And washed my hands in innocence." (Psalms 73:12-13 NKJV) But like the psalmist here, we can boldly proclaim, my defense is of God! Elsewhere in scripture it says, "If God is for us who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31)The truth is that one day good will prevail over evil no matter what the current circumstances appear to indicate. So those who have chosen to conduct their lives in a godly manner and maintain an upright heart need not be afraid. In fact the ones who need to be afraid are the wicked that have said in their heart that there is no God. Our God is very really and anger at the wicked every day!

Questions for Personal Reflection or Discussion

1.     In what area of our culture do you think is the biggest degradation of good moral values?

2.     Has it ever seemed to you like the battle will be won by the strong rather than the upright or heart? Why is that?

3.     How can being reminded of Gods intended outcome of human history and your life as an individual strengthen your heart today?

Responsive Prayer

My Father in heaven, blessed be Your Holy Name. Thank You that by Your grace alone we will be saved by the destruction of this wicked world of which Satan is the ruler. Thank you that Your anger is never directed toward Your children but toward those who persecute the upright in heart. May Your Kingdom come and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  AMEN
